Newsom Consulting is exclusively retained to recruit the following role for Downer Group: Technical Director in Queensland, Australia.

Due to winning a Design Build Maintain contract (worth $4.6bn) from the Queensland government in June 2023, Downer will be designing and delivering a new fleet of 65 GTMP trains in their brand new Torbanlea train manufacturing facility.

The role is responsible for ensuring the integration of train design, manufacturing facilities, maintenance infrastructure, and Through Life Support (TLS) services; it involves supervising a team of proficient engineers who oversee reviewing the engineering design components provided by project subcontractors and ensuring a comprehensive and unified result.

Due to continuous growth, Downer Rail is looking for a dynamic and driven Technical Director to manage the resources and perform specific assurance tasks; this role provides guidance on key decisions concerning project direction, client management, and engineering compliance for the project.

This role will also require you to ensure that approved project engineering standards and tools are maintained within the guidelines of the various technical plans while ensuring overall compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally, this role will work closely and collaboratively with colleagues where support is required from their engineering teams to achieve desired outcomes.

Skills & Experience Required:

• 15 years+ relevant experience in rolling stock engineering or project management with experience in bringing new rolling stock fleets into service.
• Strong experience in the integration of multiple workstreams for a major infrastructure project.
• Experience developing and being accountable for railway safety cases and associated safety documentation.
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills with all stakeholders, including the ability to conduct detailed investigations and provide clear and decisive results and written reports.
• Chartered Engineer (or equivalent) and eligible to be registered on Engineer’s Australia National Engineering Register and relevant State Engineering Registers.
