About This Opportunity 

An exciting post-doctoral research position is available to join a collaborative group of researchers designing impactful coral reef interventions in Palau (Micronesia) and the Philippines, with a view to sharing outcomes globally. The team partners reef ecologists at UQ with researchers at the University of the Philippines, the Palau International Coral Reef Center, and the University of Newcastle (UK). Specifically, we are developing intervention strategies, including restoration, that help coral reefs adapt to climate change and in a range of ecological environments.

The position is based at UQ but will involve field travel to Palau and potentially the Philippines. Specific activities include both field studies to measure key ecological processes as well as the use of an existing ecological model to simulate alternative management strategies. The project will have practical benefits for reef restoration but also contribute to a broader theoretical agenda on how to construct complementary management approaches to maximise the future trajectory of corals.

Key responsibilities will include:

Research

  • Participating in field studies of coral reef ecological processes
  • Running and extending the parameterisation of our ecological model, Reefmod
  • Analysing data and writing papers
  • Collaborating with project researchers
  • Assisting with project reporting
  • Communication of project results

Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.
  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position until April 2026 at Academic level A. The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $77,324.85- $102,945.12, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $90,470.08 – $120,445.79 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.

About You  

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in marine science, ideally from coral reefs
  • Demonstrated quantitative skills that include the use of coding to manipulate and analyse data
  • Strong computing skills that ideally include matlab and/or R.
  • Use of statistical models.
  • Excellent written and statistical skills
  • A familiarity with marine conservation and coral reefs would be an advantage but is not mandatory
