Why Your Role Matters

The globally leading School of Risk & Actuarial Studies is seeking to appoint a senior academic Associate Professor (Level D) / Professor (Level E).

As an Associate Professor (Level D) you will play a key role in leading and advancing outstanding research at both national and international levels.

As a Professor (Level E) you will provide academic leadership and foster excellence in research, innovative teaching, and engagement activities in your area of expertise, and contribute to providing academic leadership in the School, Faculty, and/or University as needed. The Professorial appointment includes the expectation of being appointed to school leadership roles such as the Director of Research (School of Risk and Actuarial Studies), or similar.

This position is being offered as either an Associate Professor (Level D) as a 5-year Convertible Tenure Track, or a Professor (Level E) as a continuing appointment. The appointment level will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The role will report to the Head of School and has no direct reports.

Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance will be considered and may be offered to the preferred candidate.

Responsibilities

As an Associate Professor (Level D) you will:

  • Carry out original/innovative research, actively contributing to the advancement of knowledge in relevant subject area/s, including making contributions to the discipline which are recognised at a national level with emerging international impact.
  • Establish a distinguished program of research at UNSW and build research groups in area of specialist expertise.
  • Demonstrate an established record of substantial research income, primarily as a grant application leader, consistent with that of a national leader in their field of research in leading universities.
  • Mentor and guide students and colleagues and develop the next generation of academics through involvement in supervision of HDRs (as per the norms of the discipline).
  • Undertake knowledge exchange activities and contribute to commercialisation of research outcomes
  • Make a significant positive contribution to School and Faculty including in terms of academic roles and committees.
  • Engage with academic, professional, and international organisations relevant to the objects of the School and Faculty.
  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning and cultivates a positive attitude towards teaching.
  • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements, and support students in both postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy as an exemplar for others.

In addition to the above, as a Professor (Level E) you will:

  • Make independent contributions to research that have a significant impact in your field of expertise and create a nationally recognised research track record.
  • Undertake independent research in your discipline or related areas (as per the norms of the discipline), making an independent contribution through professional practice and expertise.
  • Develop research groups in area of specialist expertise and research methods that are appropriate to the discipline.
  • Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s (based on the norms of the discipline) at a national level.
  • Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) and research end-users as a member or leader, at or above the level that is relevant to the discipline in leading universities.
  • Engage, lead and foster a culture of excellence in research and deliver outstanding research of international significance including attainment of significant competitive government and industry research funding and publication of outcomes in high quality research outlets.
  • Chair and contribute to School, Faculty, University and sector-wide committees, working groups and projects as well as other administrative functions as required. This includes for example leadership roles such as the Director of Research (School of Risk and Actuarial Studies) or similar.

As a Director of Research (School of Risk and Actuarial Studies) you will:

  • Develop a research strategy and implementation plan that builds the research capabilities and outputs of the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies
  • Enhance and develop the high quality, collegial research culture of the school.
  • Chair the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies Research Committee, including oversight of grant peer review processes, HDR students, seminars, and research knowledge exchange activities.
  • Collaborate across Schools amongst Directors of Research to assist in the coordinated and consistent delivery of School/Faculty/University strategy.

About you

You will possess the following skills and experience required as a Level D:

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Significant track record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence and deliver research leadership.
  • Excellent record of recruiting and supervising high calibre students.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.

In addition to the above, as a Professor (Level E) you will have:

  • Proven leadership of research projects and leadership of research teams, including high quality supervision of honours and postgraduate research projects.
  • Proven academic people and strategic leadership experience in education, research, and/or social engagement.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to work and influence across disciplines, faculties, institutions, industry and professional accreditation bodies.
  • Proven leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community.
